The Emotional Core of Coastal Living
Coastal living, at its heart, is about ease. It’s about light moving across a room, air flowing freely, and beachy colors that feel as though they’ve always belonged there. Not pulled from a trend forecast, but drawn from nature, time, and a deeply human experience. To me, coastal design has never been about polish or perfection. It’s about atmosphere. It’s about how a space supports you when the day finally slows down. Blue calms. Green restores. When combined with a sun-softened palette of neutrals—chalky whites, warm sands, and plaster tones—blue and green form an emotional foundation in coastal interiors. They soften a space. They ground it. And most importantly, they invite us to slow down. Together, a blue and green color palette creates interiors—and outdoor spaces—that feel timeless, expressive, and personal. Spaces shaped by light, air, and life itself. Where color doesn’t just decorate a room, but quietly tells its story.

Blue has always felt inseparable from the coast to me—but not in an obvious way. I’m not drawn to preppy or overly nautical blues. I’m pulled in by blues that feel soulful and lived-in, softened and gently faded by time. Washed indigos, chalky Mediterranean blues, sea glass tones—these hues echo the rhythm of water and sky. They carry a quiet continuity that instantly lowers the temperature of a room, both visually and emotionally. Blue has a way of calming the nervous system. It creates space. It allows us to exhale. I love seeing blue layered gently throughout an interior:- Giving life to an otherwise neutral room with a large furniture piece
- Hand-painted ceramics with irregular glazes
- Beautifully woven linens and softly faded florals
- Furniture with gently weathered paint and softened edges
- Plaster or limewashed walls that shift subtly with the light
- Grasscloth textures that add depth and dimension to a room

Green Interiors Feel Restorative and Grounding
If blue exudes calm, green represents renewal. Green interiors have an innate ability to restore us. Green reconnects us to the living world—to growth, balance, and continuity. In coastal spaces, I’m always drawn to greens that feel organic and unforced, as though they’ve wandered indoors from a garden just outside. Olive, sage, celadon, and sea glass green—these hues feel restorative because they remind us of shade, scent, and texture. They ground a space emotionally and encourage us to linger just a little longer. We see green come to life in:- Botanical textiles and softly aged floral prints
- Painted furniture with natural patina
- Collections of pottery, plants, and nature-inspired objects
- Outdoor spaces layered with citrus, rosemary, jasmine, and climbing greenery

4 Ways to Decorate with a Blue and Green Color Palette
Blue and green color palettes are endlessly versatile for coastal interiors—whether you're drawn to dramatic navy and emerald combinations or prefer soft, sun-bleached aquas and sages. The beauty of designing around coastal-inspired hues is that they naturally complement each other while evoking that breezy, waterside feeling we all crave. While there are countless ways to incorporate these colors into your home, here are a few of our favorite approaches that feel both fresh and timeless.1. Let the Fabrics Do the Talking
A blue sofa serves as the perfect anchor for a coastal-inspired living room. Choose an upholstery fabric in a shade that speaks to you—rich navy for dramatic effect or a soft sky blue for a sense of airy elegance—and build your palette from there. Layer green and blue throw pillows on top, and ground the space with a classically coastal jute area rug. Design with a mix of linen and cotton fabrics, loved for their casual, lived-in quality that only gets better with time.

Transform any room into a coastal retreat by installing grasscloth wallpaper that brings organic texture to your walls. The natural woven fibers catch light beautifully throughout the day, creating subtle movement and depth that flat paint simply can't echo. Grasscloth's inherent imperfections and variations make each wall feel uniquely handcrafted, adding an artisanal quality that feels true to coastal design. Layer other textural elements throughout the space, like a handwoven seagrass basket, furniture with cane detailing, and a jute or sisal area rug.

3. Decorate with Artwork Inspired by Coastal Living
Curate a collection of artwork featuring swirling blues and greens that capture the movement and depth of water. Abstract pieces work particularly well in coastal interiors because they suggest seascape scenery without being literal or overly thematic. Let one larger statement piece shine on its own or curate a mix of art in a gallery wall, using different frame styles in natural wood or white to keep the look casual and collected rather than matchy-matchy.

4. Incorporate Elements of Greenery in Every Space
Bring the outdoors in and style your coastal space with lush greenery that adds life and movement to the room. Palms, fiddle leaf figs, and monstera plants work beautifully in coastal interiors, their deep green leaves creating a tropical, resort-like atmosphere that pairs perfectly with ocean-inspired blues. Cluster plants at different heights—a tall floor plant in a woven basket, trailing pothos on shelving, and fresh-cut florals on side tables—to create layers of visual interest. If you don’t consider yourself a green thumb, faux plants are remarkably realistic and still deliver the fresh, natural element that makes coastal spaces feel complete.
