Styling Secret: Kathy's Rule Of Threes

Published
Hi cuties! Thinking of doing a seasonal decor refresh over the upcoming long Memorial Day weekend (PSA: don't forget to shop our Sale for up to 35% off)? I know that I personally love to take the extra time over a holiday weekend to tackle some of the decor projects that have been on my mind...which brings me to the subject of today's post! One of my favorite styling secrets and little tricks I use to organize my thoughts as a designer is to use Rule of Threes whenever I arrange any decorative objects—be it on a bookshelf, coffee table, or mantle.

"What is the Rule of Threes, you ask? Read on and check out the video below to learn more!"

When it comes to styling your favorite decorative objects—from sculptures to trinkets to vases to coffee table books—using the Rule of Threes means that start by grouping your items literally in threes (not so subtle a name for the Rule, is it). There's just something about a triad that is just oh-so-visually-appealing!  But beyond simply dividing into threes, I recommend creating visual anchor points by starting with one larger or heavier item and accenting it with smaller pieces. This is going to ground the vignette and give it a sense of structure and gravitas.

Another one of the Rule of Threes principles is to aim for one horizontal item, one vertical item, and one sculptural item when your styling a vignette.

"For example, if I'm styling the open shelves in the KKH showroom (as shown in the video above), I might want to go with one designer coffee table book (horizontal), one tall vase (vertical), and one freeform sculpture (sculptural)."

At the end of the day, it's about finding ways to artfully display both your decorative objects as well as your practical ones (that jar of pens and that tray with the remotes might as well become part of the decor scheme) is a way that makes you feel joyful and inspired.
